heres what a smaller grid size looks like and what the desired playable hex grid looks like in it 

there are OTHER methods, much more advanced, like recursively making an icosahedron more complex until it approximates a sphere of hexagons and a few pentagons, but then the hexes are going all in different angles at different parts of the globe. for me i dont care that i cant have a full world map. having east-west distances necessarily go along parallels bothers me a little though.

so what kind of game is it

a game where you put dots a sphere from the looks of it

theres also a fibonacci spiral method to evenly distribute dots across a sphere but turning that into an indexable grid is hard. something with x and y directions that you can do vector operations on. the dots are just anywhere and don't have definite neighbors or directions to the next ones. the way i'm doing sucks because the hexes will get ridiculously distorted at the poles but the axial grid will be easy to work with. and it's the same area even if distorted, just not at all the same land shape. so in the game if youre close to the poles and you "walk east", you will have to follow this curved path along the parallel which isnt realistic or ideal for just taking a path from a to b

why would anyone want to distribute dots along a sphere though

so the units can move to them and they can be the centers or vertices of hex provinces which are equal area tracts of land containing things like pops or buildings

even if it's hard to make the decision that "i'm going to go running now", once i push through the "i'm tired" or whatever and just GO, i dont fucking stop 5 minutes into the run and forget what i was doing and lose motivation. i finish the fucking route. once the decision is made, the action is followed through with. this is NOT the case for studying anything, or working with computers

enjoying it, not quite as much as helck but its probably "better" written than helck.
the start of helck is obviously carried ridiculously hard by helck himself (which is fine) and even pacing wise i feel like there's a bit of a misstep because the real story doesnt even really start until helck goes "okay its time to tell you my backstory" and then you get two volumes straight of his backstory
which once again, i liked a lot, but there were probably multiple ways to handle this better
volundio feels much more well rounded, which is nice and its good that its not just a complete rehash/retread and feels quite different
